Abstract

The boiler is a critical component in the utility system of palm oil mills, as it generates steam required for production processes and power generation. At PT. X, a Takuma N-600 SA water tube boiler is utilized, using biomass— specifically palm kernel shells and fibres—as its primary fuel source. This study aims to evaluate the boiler’s efficiency using both the direct and indirect methods. Operational data analyzed include fuel mass flow rate, steam pressure and temperature, and the calorific value of the fuel. The results show that the boiler efficiency ranges from 68,78% to 69.74% using the direct method, and between 67,73% and 67,88% using the indirect method. These values fall short of the vendor’s specified target of 75%. The suboptimal efficiency is presumed to be caused by factors such as scale buildup due to improper blowdown procedures and poor feedwater quality resulting from malfunctioning filtration systems. These findings highlight the need for operational improvements to enhance the boiler’s overall energy performance.
