Indonesia's energy needs continue to increase along with the increasing population. Optimization of the crude oil
separation process is urgently needed in today's oil refineries due to the high energy costs and the requirement for
quality oil products. One of the important components in an oil refinery is the Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) which
functions as the initial stage in oil processing. This study aims to identify the effect of variations in feed conditions on
unit performance and to develop troubleshooting steps in the CDU using Aspen Hysys software. The raw materials
used in this process simulation are a mixture of Vasconia, Sapinhoa, and Omelca crude oils. The process of analyzing
and troubleshooting the process system in the CDU has been carried out and it was found that if without adjusting
the operating conditions, operational problems will arise in the form of jet flooding events on trays-15 of the Main
Tower when the Omelca content in the CDU feed is more than 50%-vol and the CDU feed flow rate is greater than
112,000 bpd. The problem of jet flooding can be overcome by reducing the Main Steam flow rate, reducing the AGO
Steam flow rate, and reducing the boil-up ratio of the kerosene side stream reboiler unit.
